Welcome to National Stop on Red Week 2026
Every Red Light Is a Choice.
Every day, drivers approach intersections with a decision to make: stop or keep going.
Most choose to stop. But those who don’t can change lives in an instant.
National Stop on Red Week (August 2–8, 2026) is dedicated to raising awareness about the dangers of red-light running and inspiring every driver to make the safe choice. In partnership with Verra Mobility, we’re working to educate communities, amplify this life-saving message, and encourage safer choices at intersections nationwide. This year’s theme, Stop Today. Protect Tomorrow., reminds us that one moment of patience can prevent a lifetime of heartbreak.
As President of the National Coalition for Safer Roads, I’ve witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of red-light-running crashes. I’ve also seen the difference communities can make when they come together to promote safer intersections, responsible driving, and proven safety solutions.
What to Expect This Week
Throughout National Stop on Red Week, we’ll explore:
- The latest trends and data surrounding red-light-running crashes, and what’s working to prevent them.
- Powerful stories from survivors and advocates who are using their voices to inspire change.
- How education, engineering, enforcement, and technology are helping create safer intersections across the country.
Our mission is clear: to prevent traffic fatalities, protect pedestrians and drivers alike, and empower individuals to be part of the solution.
You Can Make a Difference
Whether you’re a transportation professional, business, law enforcement officer, elected official, safety advocate, or concerned citizen, you can help make a difference.
Follow our social media channels, share this week’s messages, download and utilize our 2026 Stop on Red Week Toolkit, and encourage others to make stopping on red a lifelong habit.
Together, we CAN save lives.

Safer Roads Through Education and Partnership
Creating safer intersections takes more than one solution. It takes education, engineering, enforcement, technology, and a shared commitment to protecting lives.
Across the country, transportation agencies, law enforcement, and safety organizations are using public awareness campaigns, roadway improvements, and automated traffic enforcement to encourage safer driving behaviors. More than 333 U.S. communities use red-light safety cameras, and research shows these programs have helped reduce fatal red-light-running crashes in large cities by 21%. Communities that have removed red-light safety cameras have experienced a 30% increase in fatal red-light-running crashes.
Working Together for Safer Roads
This year, we’re proud to partner with Verra Mobility to help educate the public, encourage safer driving behaviors, and support proven traffic safety solutions that save lives.
Our shared goal isn’t simply enforcing traffic laws; it’s preventing crashes before they happen. Through education, innovation, and public awareness, we’re working together to inspire safer choices and protect everyone who shares the road.
Everything we do comes back to one goal: preventing crashes and protecting lives.
Success isn’t measured by citations issued. It’s measured by lives saved.

Technology That Protects Lives
Red-light safety cameras are about more than enforcement. They’re about protecting people, preventing crashes, and encouraging safer decisions before tragedy occurs.
Communities across the country are combining education, roadway improvements, and automated traffic safety technology to reduce dangerous driving and make intersections safer for everyone.
Proven Results
The results speak for themselves.
According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), cities using red-light safety cameras have experienced a 21% reduction in fatal red-light-running crashes and a 14% reduction in fatal crashes at all signalized intersections.
Those numbers represent lives saved, families kept together, and tragedies prevented.
National organizations, including the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety, recognize automated enforcement as an important part of a comprehensive approach to intersection safety, alongside education, engineering, and law enforcement.

The Work Continues –
Stop Today. Protect Tomorrow.
Every crash prevented begins with one safe decision.
Red-light running is entirely preventable, and each of us has a role to play in creating safer intersections through education, advocacy, and responsible driving.
One moment of patience can save a lifetime of heartache.
The Stories Behind the Statistics
Our partner, Verra Mobility, highlighted why this campaign matters by sharing the stories behind the statistics.
You met Julie Nicholson, who endured being struck by a speeding red-light-runner while jogging in Golden Gate Park and now advocates for safer streets, and Jefohn Jefferson, whose journey reminds us that the consequences of red-light running can affect families for generations. Their experiences expose the truth, that the effects of roadway tragedy extend far beyond the scene and can last a lifetime.
Read the blog to learn how education, awareness, and proven safety solutions are helping reduce preventable tragedies.
Creating Safer Intersections Together
Julie and Jefohn’s stories remind us that behind every statistic is a person, a family, and a future forever changed.
National Stop on Red Week may be coming to a close, but the commitment to safer roads continues every day.
By sharing these messages, supporting proven safety solutions, and choosing to Stop on Red, we can help prevent crashes, protect lives, and create safer intersections for everyone.
Thank you for supporting National Stop on Red Week 2026 and for being part of a movement dedicated to making every journey a safe one.
