Stop on Red Week 2025
SUNDAY, AUGUST 3: Introduction to Stop on Red Week
Every year, too many lives are cut short by something entirely preventable: red-light running crashes. As we mark National Stop on Red Week 2025 (August 3–9), I invite you to pause — and power up your voice.
This week is more than a campaign. It’s a movement of Safe Stops. Stronger Communities.
As President of the National Coalition for Safer Roads, I’ve seen the heartbreak. I’ve lived it. And I’ve witnessed what happens when communities come together to demand intersection safety, stronger traffic enforcement, and a commitment to always #StopOnRed.
What to Expect This Week:
-
We’ll explore historic and recent data trends around red-light running crashes — and what’s working to prevent them.
-
You’ll hear from passionate advocates and survivors who are using their voices to spark change.
-
We’ll highlight how red-light safety cameras, policy changes, and community-led education are driving down fatalities and making streets safer across the U.S.
Our mission is clear: to prevent traffic fatalities, protect pedestrians and drivers alike, and empower individuals to be part of the solution.
You can make a difference.
Whether it’s sharing your story, supporting safer road policies, or simply stopping at every red light — your action matters.
👉 Learn more, get involved, and help us spread the message this week and all year long by downloading the resources and sharing!
Because every life matters. At every light.

TUESDAY, AUGUST 5: The Trends
In redefining traffic safety, we must focus on new solutions to realize a transportation system that never fails to protect people.
With approximately one-third of all intersection fatalities occurring at signalized interchanges, we must make system improvements with safety in mind.
2021 Trends in Red-Light Running (data from 168 red-light safety camera programs)
- More drivers ran red lights in July than any other month.
- More than 1.3 million red-light running violations occurred during the hours of 1-5 pm.
- Independence Day Weekend was the highest-ranked holiday travel period for red-light running.
- More than 4.2 million drivers ran red lights in 2021.
For the people who experience crashes and for the loved ones of those who are killed and injured from red-light running, the safety issue behind these numbers is very real.

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 6: Real Stories, Real Impact
Every single number you see in a traffic safety statistic—every life lost, every injury recorded—is someone’s loved one. A parent. A child. A friend. In 2023 alone, 1,086 lives were taken too soon, and over 136,000 people were injured in crashes caused by red-light running. This isn’t just data. This is heartbreak. This is preventable. And we can’t look away.
At the National Coalition for Safer Roads, we believe in turning pain into purpose. We believe that advocacy backed by truth and technology can and will save lives.
Technology that Protects—Proof that It Works
Red-light safety cameras aren’t just about enforcement—they’re about protection. About prevention. About changing behavior before another life is shattered.
According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), cities using red-light cameras have seen a 21% drop in fatal red-light crash rates. At all signalized intersections, the drop is 14%. That is lives saved. Families kept whole. Futures preserved.
Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety reinforces this in their 2025 Roadmap to Safety, emphasizing that:
“Automated Enforcement Programs augment traditional enforcement and are effective in deterring excessive speed and red-light running on our roadways.”
In tandem with safety technologies and stronger vehicle standards, these programs play a vital role in protecting vehicle occupants and everyone who shares the road. The National Coalition for Safer Roads is proud to be featured in this year’s report, joining a national movement that recognizes the power of data-backed, community-minded solutions.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) also supports automated enforcement as part of a comprehensive safety strategy that includes education, engineering, and enforcement.
From Communities Across the Country
Colorado Springs, Colorado
“There’s a halo effect,” explains Lt. Steve Noblitt of CSPD. “Drivers change how they move—not just at one intersection, but for miles afterward.” This is behavior change in real time. This is technology working hand-in-hand with education and enforcement. Source
Arizona
The City of Scottsdale has used photo enforcement for nearly 30 years. A landmark, 2017 analysis credited photo enforcement with reducing speed-related collisions by 65% and overall crashes by approximately one-quarter. Source
This Is Your Call to Action
We don’t have to accept red-light running as a tragic inevitability. We have the tools. We have the technology. And most importantly, we have our voices. Your voice. My voice. Our collective voice matters.
Let’s keep pushing forward. Let’s keep speaking out. And let’s keep working until our roads are safe for every pedestrian, every cyclist, every driver—every loved one.

THURSDAY, AUGUST 7: Advocacy in Action – Your Voice Can Save Lives
Red-light running fatalities are more than statistics—they represent real people: mothers, fathers, children, friends. Each loss is a stark reminder of the importance of stopping on red.
To address this preventable issue, we must take collective action:
- Advocate for Safer Intersections: Support the implementation of red-light safety camera programs, which have been shown to reduce fatal red-light running crash rates by 21% in large cities.
- Educate and Raise Awareness: Participate in community events and share information about the dangers of red-light running to promote a culture of safety.
- Support Legislative Efforts: Encourage lawmakers to enact and enforce laws that deter red-light running and protect all road users.
Your voice matters. By taking these steps, we can work towards a future where everyone makes it home safely.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 8: It’s about everyone using the road.
Roughly half of those killed in red-light-related crashes aren’t the ones running the light. They’re passengers, pedestrians, and bicyclists.
| Year | Signalized Intersection Fatalities | Red‑Light–Related Fatalities | Ped/Bike from Red Lights |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2018 | 3,347 | 871 | 57 |
| 2019 | 3,296 | 856 | 62 |
| 2020 | 3,577 | 1,074 | 58 |

Why It Matters
-
Red-light deaths are rising, up 49% since 2019.
-
Innocent bystanders—walkers, cyclists, and passengers—make up over half of those killed.
-
In 2022, 84 pedestrians and bicyclists lost their lives in red-light-related crashes.
Safer Streets Start with Smarter Signals
Preventing these tragedies is possible. Proven solutions like red-light safety cameras and protected crossings can save lives—especially for the most vulnerable road users.
Let’s shift the focus: it’s not just about drivers. It’s about everyone using the road.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 9: Every Life Matters at Every Light: A Message from Melissa Wandall
Every day, people needlessly die and are seriously injured in preventable traffic fatalities — especially at intersections. We each hold the power and the responsibility to advocate for safer roads and more mindful choices behind the wheel.
In her powerful new blog post, “Stop on Red Week 2025: Every Life Matters at Every Light,” Melissa Wandall, President of the National Coalition for Safer Roads, shares a deeply personal and urgent message about why intersection safety matters now more than ever.
Melissa’s story began with unimaginable loss — the death of her husband, Mark, who was killed by a red-light runner just weeks before their daughter was born. That moment changed her life forever — and ignited her mission to protect others from the same fate.
Her blog calls readers to action during Stop on Red Week 2025 (August 3–9) — a national campaign focused on education, advocacy, and prevention. Through compelling statistics and a heartfelt plea, Melissa reminds us that every red light is a safeguard — and every choice to obey it is a choice to save a life.
🛑 This isn’t just a safety message — it’s a movement. Melissa invites drivers, families, and communities to pause, reflect, and commit to one life-saving habit: always stop on red.
“This campaign isn’t mine alone. It’s for every person who wants their loved ones to make it home safely.” — Melissa Wandall
