Monday, October 17: Introduction to National School Bus Safety Week
What started as a letter-writing campaign to President Nixon in 1969 has evolved into an impactful national movement for school bus safety. National School Bus Safety Week takes place the third week of October, touching the lives of many every year.
National School Bus Safety Week (NSBSW) is October 17-21, 2022. This year, we will Zero in on Bus Safety.
According to School bus Fleet, in the 2018-19 school year, an estimated 479,867 yellow school buses provided daily transportation to students in the United States.
-
- More than 25 million children ride school buses daily throughout the United States.
- That accounts for 47,000,000 trips daily – before you include an estimated 5,000,000 more for activity trips.
- Roughly 54% of all K-12 students in the United States rely on school bus transportation.
National School Bus Safety Week reminds students, parents, teachers, and the community to keep school bus safety at the forefront. NCSR is proud to partner with Verra Mobility and other road safety champions for this year’s National School Bus Safety Week. Please join us by sharing #NSBSW2022 content, stories, and more. Tuesday, October 18: Performance-Based Results
Everyone has seen that flashing school bus stop-arm urging drivers to stop so the bus’s young passengers can get on or off safely. Studies show that thousands of motorists disregard these stop-arms every school day, unnecessarily putting children, bus drivers, and other motorists at risk. Vehicles illegally passing stopped school buses caused an estimated two-thirds of school bus loading and unloading fatalities. Additionally, according to the American School Bus Council, more school-age children are killed from 7-8 am and 3-4 pm than any other time of the day.
The following video shows that these incidents occur more than you think.
Safety is the responsibility of everyone. This report card highlights the issues we face today and the solutions available to solve them. Through education and enforcement, we have the power to see positive change in our communities.

Wednesday, October 19: Reducing Illegal Passing
Safe enforcement technology saves lives. School bus stop-arm safety cameras are one of the many tools school districts utilize to maximize their efforts in increasing school bus safety. Their number one priority is to protect children as they ride school buses to and from school every day.

Thursday, October 20: Life-Saving Legislation
While stop-arm laws exist in all 50 states, it’s estimated that tens of millions of drivers illegally pass school buses yearly.
We encourage you to practice safe driving around school buses and always stop for the school bus stop-arm. Don’t know what the stop-arm laws are in your state? Find them at: https://www.drive-safely.net/school-bus-laws/.
To help combat this issue, more states are working to catch drivers and hold them accountable for illegally passing school buses. These traffic safety champions have helped to expand and progress life-saving legislation by allowing cameras to be placed outside the bus to record such events.
We encourage you to use your voice, contact your school district officials, and reach out to your legislative representatives. They are listening.

Friday, October 21: Looking ahead on the future of School Bus Safety
The National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services (NASDPTS) annual survey shows drivers routinely ignore the stop-arm and illegally pass school buses. Throughout the 2021-2022 180-day school year, NASDPTS data shows an estimated 41.8 million school bus stop-arm violations per year among America’s motoring public.
The future of school bus safety is looking bright. Now more than ever, we can create innovative solutions to combat this serious safety issue. Modernizing our school buses and implementing technology solutions can change driver behavior and keep our children and communities safe. According to Verra Mobility data, 99% of drivers who received and paid a ticket for illegally passing a school bus did not receive a second violation. Verra Mobility school bus stop-arm safety programs yielded a 21% reduction in issued citations when comparing the first month of the 2021-2022 school year to the last.
