Millions of Americans head out on the road every day—driving to work, taking kids to school, or running errands. Most of us don’t think twice about the potential risks, but the truth is hard to ignore: on average, 116 people die and more than 6,500 people are seriously injured in road collisions in the U.S. every single day (NHTSA, 2022). Those aren’t just numbers to me—they’re mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters, and sons and daughters whose families will never be the same.
There is good news, though: NHTSA recently estimated 39,345 traffic fatalities in 2024—the lowest fatality rate since 2019. That progress shows us what’s possible when communities, lawmakers, technology, and advocates come together. But it also reminds us there’s more work to do—because even one death is too many.
Welcome! If you’re new here, I’m Melissa Wandall, President of the National Coalition for Safer Roads (NCSR). I get to work alongside passionate advocates, law enforcement, and public health professionals to make our roads safer for everyone. I’m here to share what I’ve learned, highlight actionable strategies, and help communities prevent collisions and save lives.
Prioritizing safety measures can save lives—and that’s exactly what the Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety aim to do. This organization brings together consumer advocates, public health groups, law enforcement, and insurance companies to create safer roadways nationwide.
Today, I want to walk you through the key insights from the 2025 Roadmap to Safety guide that the Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety have put together. We’ll cover how automated enforcement, evidence-based strategies, and community collaboration can make a real difference in reducing road collisions and promoting a culture of safety for all road users.
Why Roadway Safety Is So Important
Road safety isn’t just a statistic—it’s about people’s lives. Every collision has a ripple effect: families are affected, communities are shaken, and resources are stretched thin. By focusing on safety now, we can prevent injuries and save lives. That’s why I’m so passionate about sharing these strategies and encouraging everyone to come together to make a bigger impact!
When the Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety asked me, through my role with the National Coalition for Safer Roads, to partner on the 2025 Roadmap to Safety, it was a no-brainer. Their mission to advance proven, evidence-based solutions aligns perfectly with the work we’ve been doing at NCSR. We both believe that no one should die or be seriously injured due to something as preventable as a roadway collision. We’re able to amplify our voices, combine our expertise, and bring real solutions to the communities that need them most. And the truth is—we can’t afford to wait. That’s why this partnership matters so deeply to me: it’s about turning passion into action and creating safer roads for every single one of us.
How to Make a Difference In Road Safety
The Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety works to bring together consumer advocates, public health organizations, law enforcement, and insurance companies to create safer roadways nationwide. Their 2025 Roadmap to Safety is a practical, evidence-based guide that shows how we can reduce fatalities and injuries while fostering a culture of safety for everyone on the road.
Key Strategies to Reduce Road Collisions
So, what can actually move the needle? The Roadmap lays out clear, evidence-based strategies that work—practical steps we can take at both the state and federal level.
- Strengthening enforcement of existing safety laws: Consistent enforcement saves lives.
- Implementing automated enforcement technologies: Tools like red-light and speed cameras help catch risky behaviors before they cause harm.
- Promoting education campaigns for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists: Awareness matters—every trip is safer when everyone knows the rules.
- Encouraging collaboration across organizations: Local, state, and national groups working together amplify impact.
I can’t stress enough: these strategies work best when communities take action together.
Creating a Culture of Safety
Safety isn’t just about laws or technology—it’s about the choices we make every day. Drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, and policymakers all play a role. Communities that embrace safe habits, advocate for stronger legislation, and support roadway improvements see real, measurable results. And together, we can make our streets safer for everyone.
